An appeal from the Somali Women to defend their quotas on the National Constituent Assembly and the new Parliament
Mogadishu-A diverse and colorful Somali women activists today met at City Palace Hotel in Abdulaziz district of Mogadishu, Somalia to discuss the participation of women in Somali politics and their roles on post-transition Somalia.
The meeting commended the progress made by theTransitional Federal Government of Somalia and the review of the traditionalelders on the constitution and paving the way for the continuation of theconstitutional process.
The Somali women agreed and noted to appeal to all concerned to join them in
defense of their quotas on the National Constituent Assembly and the new
Parliament. The meeting specified the following;
1) We ask the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia to respect the Garowe
principals and all the ensuing agreements of the Roadmap, which all clearly
specify the quotas of women within the political sphere of post-transition
2) We appeal to the Somali Traditional Elders to similarly respect the agreements
and in due diligence nominate the required 30% quotas for the National
Constituent Assembly and the new parliament.
3) We urge the Roadmap signatories to fulfill the Roadmap political agreements
and uphold the quotas of the Somali women.
4) We similarly appeal to the International Community in the upholding of the
Somali women quotas, through which the political rights and civil liberties of
the women are protected.
Finally, Somali women agreed to defend their due rights and have expressed
commitment to fulfill their obligations to their nation.
