UAE delivers a statement on human rights in Somalia

WAM Geneva, Sep 27th, 2012 (WAM)–Ambassador Obaid Al Zaabi, UAE Permanent Representative to United Nations and Other International Organisations in Geneva has called for concerted international efforts to curb the tragedy of Somali people.

Al Zaabi was addressing the Human Rights Council in Geneva, on the status of human rights in Somalia before the Human Rights Council.

He welcomed the report of an independent expert Shams Al Bari, who focuses on the state of human rights in Somalia, noting that the expert would be received by the Somali government to facilitate his mission.

Al Zaabi underscored that the UAE is concern about the report, which focuses on dire human rights conditions in Somalia, calling for concerted international efforts to curb the tragedy of Somali people.

The UAE ambassador urged the new government in Somalia to make use of the technical international assistance to build the country and overcome the humanitarian challenges.

He said the UAE has contributed US$40 million since the beginning of the Somali crisis.
