UN Representative meets with the new President of Somaliland

Hargeisa (QJ) – The President of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Irro), held a lengthy meeting at the Presidential Palace with the Acting Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Somalia, James Swan, who visited Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland.

Swan emphasized the UN’s readiness to continue its vital work in Somaliland and welcomed President Irro’s peace appeals, particularly his call for resolving disputes through dialogue and peaceful means.

During the meeting, President Irro informed Swan that since taking office, he had formally extended an unconditional peace proposal, but this was met with a series of attacks from various directions in eastern Somaliland. He accused groups controlling the Sool region of undermining his peace efforts.

President Irro highlighted the establishment of Somaliland’s Peace Committee, tasked with:

Facilitating unconditional ceasefires.
Promoting the exchange of prisoners.
Reopening critical roads for public and commercial movement.
The President assured Swan that Somaliland’s long-standing peace and stability over the past 30 years have significantly contributed to the Horn of Africa region. Therefore, Somaliland seeks UN assistance in strengthening and enhancing its security institutions.

Finally, President Irro expressed his government’s readiness to closely collaborate with the UN, other international organizations, and donor states to reinforce peace, stability, and institutional reform in Somaliland.
