Kenya: Somali Refugees to Be Relocated, Says Saitoti

The government yesterday will relocate the more than 600,000 Somali refugees back to their country.

Internal Security minister George Saitoti said the refugees at Dadaab in Garissa will be relocated to regions under the control of the AMISOM in collaboration with TFG and KDF which are safe. Saitoti, however, said the government will treat the refugees humanely during the relocation exercise. Addressing journalists outside the Malindi district headquarters after a security meeting in the area, he said the intention is to help restructure Somalia and ensure that stability returns following the successful campaign to drive out the al-Shabaab fighters from most parts of the country.

Saitoti said the inclusion of the KDF in the Amison command and its cooperation with the TFG had helped to win the war against the Al shabaab terror group. He said he was optimistic that peace will soon return to Somalia. “We shall relocate the over 600,000 refugees from one of Africa’s largest refugee camp to territories liberated by the joint action of the Transitional Federal government and KDF who were currently working under the AMISOM,” he said

Saitoti said the Amison will help in creating stability in Somalia and expressed optimism that there wILL be a lot of development in the war-torn-country soon. He said a lot was being done in Somalia, adding that Kenya was not taking chances on security matters internally as it was a threat to the nation. Saitoti said police have good progress in the investigations in the recent attack in Nairobi. He said security personnel have arrested the prime suspects and asked members of the public to report any suspected terrorists so that action is taken against them.

He appealed to hoteliers particularly in the Coastal region which is a major target for terror attacks to report any suspicious characters. “The government is carrying out investigations on the attacks that occurred in Nairobi recently, several arrests have so far been made and I assure all Kenyans that the country is serve they should provide us with information of any terror suspects for action to be taken,” he said. He said Coastal line was a key tourism destination which could easily be affected by insecurity, adding that the government has stepped up surveillance in the region to stem any terrorist attacks.
