Clashes Between Rival Clans in Somalia Left 40 Dead

Mogadishu, Jan 20 (Prensa Latina) Heavy armed clashes between two rival clans in villages near Deefow, in the Somali province of Hiiraan, caused 40 deaths and a considerable number of wounded, authorities reported today. The clashes were classified as severe by sources, after stating that also many houses were burned.

Somalia lives in a situation of widespread conflict since 1991, when guerrilla alliances overthrew the then President Mohamed Siad Barre and since then the instability is present in the relations between its various communities.

This society is divided into clans and sub-clans, whose armed factions are frequently fighting for the control of territories and aquifers.

Politically, these armed groups respond on many occasions to heads identified as warlords, who may or may not support the local and federal commanders.

However, this usually expresses the weakness of the Somali state construction, always ready to explode due to the diverse interests of its components.
