Three Canadians believed killed in Syria known to Edmonton police

EDMONTON — An Edmonton mother is mourning the loss of her son, believed to have died in Syria.

The mother didn’t confirm reports that Mahad Hirsi, 20, was killed along with his two cousins fighting for ISIS. She hasn’t said why he was in Syria.

City police say the three men were on their radar as “high-risk travellers.”

A source close to the family tells Global News that the cousins, brothers Hamsa Kariye, 30, and Hersi Kariye, are also believed to be dead.

“The family has reported that the kids are passed away there,” said Jibril Ibrahim of the Somali Canadian Cultural Society of Edmonton. “We don’t know the true intention of why they left.”

Federal government officials have not confirmed the deaths.
