Somaliland President: Beefing-up of Somalia’s Army is a return to the bloody past

Hargeisa-Somaliland president Ahmed Mohamed Silanyo remarked on his governments concerned regarding the beefing up of the so called Somalia army by the international community.

Somaliland president spoke of the matter on his annual speech at the celebration commemorating the 24th anniversary of the re-affirmation of the state of Somaliland in 1991.

Mr. Silanyo in his speech questioned the motive of the “international” community in arming one of the most corrupted entities in Somalia overlooking the overwhelming concerns of Somalis.

“If the international community proceeds with arming the Somalia militia, it will only revert the region in bloody conflicts” remarked Silanyo.

The president also mentioned that there is a UN arms embargo on Somalia and that the world should be cautious in arming Somalis.

Somaliland joined the Italian Somaliland shortly after independency in 1990, but fought bloody wars with the Somalia government in the 1980’s.

Somaliland enjoys a relative peace since 1991 after re-affirming its independence and is currently has democratically elected yet unrecognized state.
