Hargeisa, May 7, 2013 (SDN) –Heavily armed and dressed in black from head to toe, an elite squad of anti-terror police commandos known as RRU (Rapid Reaction Unit) storm the home of Ahmad Abdi Godane, the Emir of Al-Shabab in Ahmed Dhagah district, Hargeisa where his mother lives. Counter-terrorism officers raided Godane’s home, frightening his old and ailing mother who was there. Fear gripped many residents of Ahmed Dhagah district on yesterday when news filtered in that anti-terror police stormed the home of Godane’s mother. Anti-terror police commandos spearheaded by Somaliland police commissioner Brigadier general Abdilahi Fadal Iman were believed to have acted on a tip-off. They were said to have arrived in the area around 11 am in search of the Emir of Al-shabab, Ahmad Abdi Godane also known as Abu Zubayr. The soldiers then ransacked the house and their search yielded no fruits. Meanwhile, security sources close to the police confirmed to the independent that the house of Abu Zubair’s brother in 26 June district was also stormed, arresting the leader of Al-shabab’s brother, Ali Abdi Godane who is a member of Somaliland’s armed forces. The security source, who craved anonymity, added that another brother of Al shabab’s leader was also called for questioning after the operation. Extraordinary details of the heavy-handed police operation against the leader of Al-shabab were not revealed by the police and our attempt to reach police commissioner failed.
