Eight foreigners arrested aboard a Nairobi-bound bus at Timau Road block in Buuri District of Meru County were each jailed for six months in prison Among them were six Ethiopia nationals and two of Somali origin and were arrested after police officers were tipped by the members of the public.
According to the Buuri Deputy Police Boss Joel Chebii, the police officers awaited the bus and searched for them and the eight were arrested after they could not produce their identification documents.
“We interrogated them and we were able to identify their origin and we arraigned them in court where they were charged for being in the country illegally and failing to produce registration documents”, said Chebii. The eight pleaded guilty to the offence in front of the Nanyuki Chief Magistrate and were ordered to be deported once they serve their full jail terms.
The police boss further thanked the members of public for giving information that led to the arrest of the aliens whom he said are using the Isiolo route to transit to other parts of the country. During the Christmas celebrations last year, 14 more aliens were arrested at the same road block.
