Somalia: Kenya and Israel to Cooperate in the Fight Against Al-Shabaab

President Uhuru Kenyatta will on Monday travel to Israel for a three-day State visit, reports said on Monday.

During his visit, he will meet Israel’s president, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and senior government officials.

He will also attend a forum on the economy, and visit key showcase projects, including industry and agriculture.

Kenya has benefited from the Israeli government through the country’s Agency for International Development Cooperation (MASHAV).

Sectors that have benefited from the cooperation include agriculture, health, water and sanitation, education, disaster management and security.

 Kenyatta and his host Mr Netanyahu are expected to discuss how the two countries can cooperate in the fight against terrorism in view of Al-Shabaab attacks in Kenya.

After his visit to Israel, President Kenyatta will travel to Tanzania to attend the 17th Summit of East African Community (EAC) Heads of State.

The summit is set to take place on February 29.

Top on the agenda for this year’s summit is to consider reports by the EAC Council of Ministers on admitting South Sudan and Somalia into the community.

During the meeting, the heads of state are also expected to launch the landmark East African electronic passport (e-passport), which will enable the free movement of people within the region.
