Somaliland: Berbera and Yirowe upraising due to resource misappropriation

Berbera (SDN)-Somaliland towns of Berbera and Yirowe a Kulmiye party strong holds are the latest towns of Somaliland to boil over due to the ruling party running amuck in resource grapping schemes according to the protestors.

People of Berbera poured onto the streets after learning the local Government is planning to bulldoze a section of that city.

The residents of Darole and Barwaqo believe the Government will sell their homes to businessmen.

Hawo Aden told SDN that they are tired of the Government acting on kickbacks looting the nation’s resources.

“We can no longer sit idle while our Government does what it pleases with our national resources” she told us.

The latest skirmishes comes after widespread protests against a deal that will allowing businessman Harbi to run a livestock facility in the town of Berbera.

Yarowe a town outside of Burao is known for its rocky hills, residents dig up and sell the rocks to construction companies.

The local Government there sold the land to businessmen and the community is appalled.

Abdallah Hasan of Yerowe town told SDN that he voted for Kulmiye party again and again and is upset because the Government allocated their land to a corrupted businessmen.

It is believed that lower ranking ministers and local officials are the culprits of these schemes, leaving the population to believe President Ahmed Silanyo is not in charged.

“The President is an elder a statesman, however he is unfit for duty and these thugs are taking advantage “says Hawo Aden.

Others in the position believe that Mr. Silanyo is the master mind of all of the misappropriations and is hiding behind his corrupted ministers.

The Somaliland Government in recent months had faced similar protest in region they for years had a lot of Support due to allegations of corruption.
