At Least 20 Dead in Quarry Collapse in Somalia

Mogadishu, Sep 20, 2013 (SDN) -At least 20 miners have been confirmed dead and two others were still missing after a stone quarry collapsed in Somalia, officials said on Friday. The incident took place late Thursday in the Karan district, north of the capital Mogadishu. Five workers were also injured. “We are still digging through rocks and sand looking for survivors,” said Ali Abdulle, the district commissioner for the Somali government.

The stone quarries are mined for construction projects. Development is taking place at a quicker pace in Mogadishu since the Islamist al-Shabaab militia was ousted from the capital in 2011.

With employment opportunities limited in the war-torn countries, many people take dangerous jobs, trying to take advantage of efforts to rebuild the city.
