”EU aid to Somalia can’t deviate Somaliland from its path to full-fledged statehood” -President Silanyo

Hargeisa, Sep 18, 2013 (SDN) -Somaliland President Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud Silanyo has welcomed the European Union’s 650 million euros aid to Somalia for 2013-16 through his Twitter account after EU approved on Monday a New Deal Compact that sets out the government priorities outlining future international support.

President Silanyo also made it clear through his Twitter tweet that the European Union’s aid to Somalia will not deviate Somaliland from its pursuit of international recognition. “Somaliland welcomes the EU commitment to Somalia. But EU aid to the region can’t deviate Somaliland from its path to full-fledged statehood” President Silanyo tweeted through his Twitter account

A one-day meeting in Brussels on Monday where some 50 high-level delegations from Africa, Europe and the Gulf attended along with aid groups and global finance institutions where donors have pledged 1.8bn euros ($2.4bn; £1.5bn) to help Somalia end more than two decades of conflict.

Somaliland government has chosen not to participate in the Conference citing that the country’s national needs and priorities are very different to Somalia’s.
