President Farole of Puntland Dissolves Parliament

Garowe, Nov 01, 2013 (SDN) —The president of Somalia’s Northeastern autonomous region of Puntland Abdirahman Farole on Thursday dissolved the region’s parliament after their tenure expired on Oct 31, 2013. President Farole dissolved Parliament, at a final Parliamentary session that marked the end of the Parliament.

Enumerating the achievements of the outgoing members of Parliament, the Speaker, Abdirashid Mohamed Hirsi stated that today’s 32 session of the parliament will be their final session. The speaker also stated that the solidarity and teamwork between all deputies was what made them accomplish their objectives as a Parliament. On behalf of other outgoing deputies, Speaker Abdirashid apologized to the President and Puntland people for whatever they may have not done as required.

President Abdirahman Farole has addressed the final session of the parliament and commended the outgoing deputies for a job well done; saying that despite a few challenges, Parliament accomplished what was expected of them by the people of Puntland.

Puntland will hold presidential election early next year and new parliament will be elected before the presidential elections in 2014.

Puntland, an arid region of north-east Somalia, declared itself an autonomous state in August 1998. Unlike Somaliland, Puntland says it does not seek recognition as an independent entity, wishing instead to be part of a federal Somalia.
