Somali and AU Troops Retake Lego From Al-Shabaab

Addis Ababa, 29 June 2015 (WIC) – Somali National Army backed by African Union troops have retaken Leego town from the armed group Al- Shabaab.

More than 50 Burundian troops who are part of African Union peacekeeping troops in Somalia are said to have been killed when Al-Shabaab launched a dawn attack on Friday at their base in Leego, 90 kilometers northwest of the capital Mogadishu.

Residents of the area said the troops reclaimed the town without any resistance from Al-Shabaab fighters who have retreated.

According to Dalsan Radio, Al-Shabaab reportedly beheaded the Deputy District Commissioner of the area who was among the people captured by Al-Shabaab.

The group has intensified attacks against government and AU troops since the start of the holy month of Ramadan.
