Somalia: Heavy Fighting Breaks Out in Kismayu

 

Kismayu, June 7, 2013 (SDN) — Inter-clan fighting broke out today in Fighting has broken out in Kismayo, the provincial capital of Jubaland state, according to residents of Kismayu. Fighting began in Calanley district hours ago and reports from the city have confirmed to us that the fighting is still going on. The Inter-clan fighting came after a much disputed election of the president of Jubaland administration in last month, where six presidents declared themselves as the legitimate presidents of the region. Heavy exchanges of machine gun and mortar fire could be heard from Calanley district, witnesses said. At least three clan militia and civilian women died and others were wounded in the clashes, according to Kismayu hospital officials. Reports also confirmed that AMISOM forces stationed in the outskirts of the city arrived Calanley district to intervene warring clan militia.
