Somaliland: Four Injured as Police Clash with Street Vendors in Hargeis’s Jama Gunti Market

Hargeisa, 16 Jan 2014 (SDN) –Business in Hargeisa’s Jama Gunti market in Hero Awr village came to a standstill on Thursday following a fracas that ensued between riot police and street vendors, leaving four people injured over the disagreements of the locality of the traders.

Trouble begun in the morning when Hargeisa local municipality tractors, under police guard, started to clean up the streets and then impounded goods from the street vendors who returned to the market after being relocated to a designated flea market.

The development forced heavily armed police to throw teargas and fire life bullets to disperse the crowd that was in hundreds, pelting cops with stones demanding to be allowed to access the market.

Vendors are said to have also injured several Police officers who was hit by a stone.
